When you start exercising, you have a lot of choice. It may take a while to find a way of moving that fits well with your goals. Besides that, it’s also important that you enjoy doing it. For example, you can do cardio to get in better condition or strength training to get stronger, but you can also combine both ways of training. One example of this is rowing.

Rowing is hot

When I was a student, rowing was already hot. Even today you see rowing machines regularly in advertisements and they also have a prominent place in the gym. Rowing puts your whole body to work. When pushing off, your leg, glutes and abs are first activated. Then you pull the cord towards you and activate your back, shoulder and arm muscles. This way you not only work on your condition, but you also increase your muscle mass at the same time. This makes rowing an intensive full-body workout.

Rowing is an accessible way to exercise and compared to running it is a safe alternative. This is because you don’t have a shock load on your joints when you row. Your feet remain stationary on the pedals, so there is less pressure on your knees than running. This makes rowing machines suitable for use by anyone who is elderly or recovering from an injury.

Sports at home

Until now I’ve only ever rowed in the gym, but with a compact rowing machine, it’s even more accessible to get started at home. I’m therefore eager to train at home in the near future with the new Blade Aqua M-1 water rower from Bluefin Fitness. This rowing machine is equipped with water resistance, whereby the water builds up the resistance in the most natural way. It immediately struck me that the Blade Aqua M-1 looks good quality. It shows robustness with an aluminium rail and steel frame. The seat slides smoothly and the footplates are adjustable. Very easy, which is good because not only me, but my husband also uses the rowing machine.

On the beautiful LCD screen I can keep track of my heart rate, time, distance and calories burned. In addition, I can keep track of my training sessions via the integrated Kinomap app, but I can also participate in training sessions and challenges. I find the built-in holder for my smartphone or tablet ideal so that I can watch a series during my training. Fortunately, this water rower does not take up much space. The Blade Aqua M-1 is lightweight and easy to move with built-in wheels. This makes it easy to fold and store after my workout.

Tips for training on the rowing machine

With the Blade Aqua M-1 rowing machine, I try to challenge myself in different ways. I like to vary what I do. This makes my workouts more fun and I last longer. As a baseline measurement, I decided to row 500 metres. After a few weeks of training, I am a lot faster in the 500 metres but I also like endurance training. I’m really tired after rowing for half an hour.

In the beginning, I mainly paid attention to the correct posture and technique and followed a beginner’s schedule that I picked up from the internet. Now I alternate short interval and endurance workouts. I challenge myself to row a few hundred meters further or a few minutes longer each time. I also play with the resistance to make my workouts more and more intensive. The Blade Aqua M-1 offers six different resistance levels.

Now I don’t immediately have the ambition to challenge myself for the Dutch Indoor Rowing Championship, but the rowing machine is a unique and fun way to work on my fitness goals. The Blade Aqua M-1 offers a good option for a full-body workout and from the comfort of home. Rowing is not boring – you can do many different exercises and challenges to get the most out of your workout. Moreover, it’s an ideal way to do a full-body workout at home.
